Traditional Chinese Medicine:
One Of The Oldest
Types Of Alternative Medicine

Traditional chinese medicine (TCM) has a different approach to health and wellness than what conventional (western) medicine does.

Currently western medicine is based on the principle, when an individual gets sick, treat the symptoms to rid the body of the illness.

TCM, and many of the other types of alternative medicine, has the attitude why wait until you get sick.

If you treat any inbalance in the body as it arises then you can effectively prevent the illness.

If an illness does manifest itself anyway, continue treating the patient as a whole.

Traditional chinese medicine sees no cause for only treating a disease.

If the entire body had been in harmony, there is no way the disease could have manifested itself to begin with.

Methods Of Diagnosis

To the newcomer to traditional chinese medicine, some of the methods used to enable a diagnosis may seem very strange and confusing. To the experienced practitioner of TCM though, all those lab tests, blood tests, urine tests and all that modern day technology can not tell you any more than what can be obtained from a few simple procedures using touch, sight, sound and smell.

  • Visual Inspection- the doctor will check your tongue for color and looks. This is known as tongue diagnosis. Many times an experienced practitioner can give an accurate diagnosis just by what they see on your tongue. Also, the complexion and body language of the patient during the interview, and just general behavior can go a long way in determining the problem.

  • A present and past medical history will be obtained

  • Listening- is done by hearing the tonal differences in your voice as you ask and answer questions

  • Smell or checking for any bad breath or obvious body odors

  • Touch will be implemented by checking your pulse at multiple locations on your body

By doing this short list of inspections above, an experienced traditional chinese medicine practitioner has completed the physical exam and has the information needed to offer a treatment plan.

Food Allergies and the Chinese 3 Step Plan

Most patients to chinese medicine find it interesting that there actually is no word to describe a food allergy in traditional chinese medicine. An allergy is actually defined as a breakdown of the immune system. The immune system itself is not one organ, it is a collective assortment of every system in the body. Therefore if you have a stomach ache from your allergy, treating the stomach will do absolutely nothing to relieve the discomfort from the rash, hives, eczema, swelling of the face and limbs or other symptoms. Because an allergy is a deficiency in multiple parts of the body (the immune system), removing the allergen may result in temporarily relieving the symptoms but the next time you are exposed to that allergen, symptoms will appear again, usually stronger than the first time.

How To Relieve A Food Allergy In TCM

Trying to relieve a food allergy in traditional chinese medicine is a 3 step process for any treatment plan.

  • Identify the allergen(s) and remove them from your environment

  • Clear the build-up (toxicity) in the system to rid the body of all symptoms, then set-up a good therapeutic chinese diet for continued health

  • Identify where the immune deficiency is occurring so treatment is set up to prevent future outbreaks even if you do accidentally come in contact with the allergen again in the future.

Obviously this 3 step plan requires the direct supervision of an experienced practitioner of chinese medicine. Investigate your options, find a doctor and set up the initial consultation. Often after diagnosis and a working treatment plan has been utilized, any future sensitivities can normally be curtailed from an at-home care plan.

In the field of peanut allergies especially, due to the immediate concern and rapid onset of a severe set of symptoms, extended studies and testing is reaching its final stages on a possible method towards recovery. Having a peanut allergy therefore may soon have the promise of a possible road to recovery through a cure.

Because of the limitations of what western medicine can do for food allergies, by combining the two treatment philosophies of western medicine and alternative therapy into one treatment plan, encouraging results are often achieved.

Our body has a low healing ability when our organs and tissues (the immune system) malfunction because of blockages and an uneven flow of energy. Talk to your health practitioner about how you can apply breakthrough chinese natural cures, its knowledge and techniques to prevent and reverse the progression of many illnesses.

Traditional chinese medicine has moved away from just the typical herbal medicine used exclusively for many many years. Today it is common to see acupuncture, diet and nutrition therapy, massage and herbal preparations being used. All of these used in combination where needed, can facilitate a return to health and well-being.
