Ayurvedic Medicine:
One Of The Ancient
Types Of Alternative Medicine

Ayurvedic medicine, one of the well-known types of alternative medicine, has been dated back over five thousand years in its country of origin, India, where it is used as a natural system of health maintenance.

A first visit to a practitioner of ayurvedic medicine feels more like a personality profile is being taken than any kind of medical exam.

An Ayurvedic practitioner specializes in a one-on-one approach for the treatment plan.

A personality profile will be built around one of the three main body types (doshas) prevalent in the human race.

By studying each patient's overall health and metabolic strengths and weaknesses, a practitioner can determine a patient's "Constitution".

This is a well-detailed plan of every patient's mental, physical, and spiritual profile which all future medical decisions will be based upon.

According to the principles of Ayurvedic medicine, all diseases originate as an inbalance in the digestive system. Since the object of the digestive system is to accept food through the mouth, convert it to energy and nutrition to build, repair and sustain a well-maintained health system, when there is a breakdown in this process, disease and poor health is the result. Symptoms will slowly start manifesting themselves in any part of the human body.

All of the functions of our body ultimately are dependent on the process of digestion. This is because all of our body receives its "fuel" -or energy source- through the foods we eat. Without food or nutrition, there is a gradual decay of every organ, muscle, tissue, bone etc..There is absolutely no part of our body that is not dependent on the act of digestion.

Common Methods Of Treatment

Foods are very important in Ayurvedic medicine so much time and care is spent devising a plan according to your body type or dosha. This is not a do-it-yourself type of program. You must have the guidance of an experienced practitioner for the beginning stages. After adjustments, if needed, following and maintaining the program will then become the responsibility of the patient.

  • Dietary Rules, Enemas and Fasting - all of these are used by adjusting the foods consumed to continue the program of maintaining the cleansing of the body

  • Breathing Exercises-Helps to control and release the everyday stress in your life

  • Herbs - are of primary importance because they can initiate the release of toxins, rebuild organs, and induce feelings of peace and tranquility

  • Massage- and herbal oils again are used as a source of releasing a build-up of toxins in your system

  • Meditation - initiates an internal mental cleansing so you can handle the everyday stresses of family, friends and your work environment

  • Exercise/Yoga-improves the circulation and speeds up the metabolism of the entire body

  • Sunshine- get outside everyday, as possible to improve circulation, raise your Vitamin D levels and strengthens the bones

Although Ayurvedic medicine is often used as a process for healing, the main objective is a return to good health. After this, emphasis is placed on the necessity to maintain that balance to prevent future difficulties. By achieving this level, future cost savings to the patient/consumer can be generous when compared to conventional medicine.
