The name Aromatherapy can be deceiving. This is because many people assume "smell stuff for better health" is the entire premise of these types of alternative medicine. But this is not the complete picture.

This type of therapy is actually a branch of herbal medicine. It utilizes the medicinal quality of plants and herbs after they have been broken down, commonly by steam-pressing or cold-pressing, into liquid oils. This is then called essential oils.

These oils, before use, are then generally diluted in different solutions, called carriers, before use. The final dilution is then used commonly for many everyday purposes such as topical skin treatments in creams, ointments and lotions, massage oils, they can be spread airborne through a diffuser, in the bath, or with hot or cold compresses.

Some conditions may actually require ingesting the oils but this procedure should never be done without getting medical supervision or guidance first.

A very few others may notice sensitivity in the area when using it topically also. If you are prone to sensitive skin, apply a small amount, already mixed with its carrier oil, onto the neck area below your ear.

Wait for 12 hours, checking periodically for a rash, raised area or itching and redness. If you do experience this, you will likely be sensitive to this oil.

There is so many conditions and just every day usages for aromatherapy, many people do not realize the value it can add to their every day life. For a detailed listing of many of the excellent advantages of aromatherapy and how they can be fit into your family's life, try adopting a few of these simple maneuvers on a recurring basis. Soon you will wonder how you could have ever did without them.

Common Conditions For Use

Using the essential oils to its greatest advantage as a valuable treatment tool comes from its treatment of airborne infections and diseases by use of the diffuser. Often the oils will be used topically on a wound site to counteract infection but this method can only be done under the guidance of a skilled practitioner.

Other than its germ-fighting capabilities, essential oils are also effective in treating anti-viral conditions such as herpes simplex. In almost every reported case, documentation has been received to show a remission in the disease. When used consistently, remission is usually within 2-5 days. After 3-4 times, complete remission seems to be the final end result.

Stress relief, generally through a diffuser, is high on many people's daily routines because the soothing scents are an excellent course of therapy to calm frazzled nerves, reduce stress and tension and lower blood pressure.

Other common conditions showing excellent results are for skin viruses, such as shingles, muscle spasms, the pain from arthritis and Aromatherapy often gets used to modify the adverse reactions from immune system responses (allergies)or for all-over body detoxification.

Purchasing Oils

When purchasing oils, many people would like to understand why the great differences in cost.

Many companies, in processing, will add other compounds to use as extenders or fillers to help bring the costs down. Also, be very wary anytime you hear similar sounding names - these are not pure essential oils. Essential oils are always very expensive. Remember though, you only use 1-2 drops per treatment though. This guarantees your bottle will last a very long time.

Another common complaint from a blended oil, the customer usually complains the treatment was not very effective. This is understandable since you must use much to much to get the full concentration of the real essential oil.
