Alternative Medicine Testing:
Fighting For Credibility
In All The Types Of
Alternative Medicine

To date, alternative medicine testing has been spotty to non-existent when compared to the famous double-blind study that is touted as the #1 most prestigious test in the medical community. Without officially receiving a seal of approval from this test, many in the medical community will not offer any support for any treatment protocols, whether it be in conventional medicine or any of the types of alternative medicine.

What Is A Double-Blind Study

A controlling agency generally picks a large group of people (often 1000 to 2000) and follows this group for a specified amount of time, logging dosages, test results, pulse, respirations and blood pressures etc. throughout the entire program. Each patient, with the aid of their independent physician, is started on the same treatment protocol. Unknown to any individual though, no patient or doctor is informed that some patient's are actually receiving medication and some patient's are only receiving placebos (fake pills- usually sugar pills). No one in the entire group is informed who is in which control group. Generally, on most testing programs, this information is computer generated so absolutely no one ever finds out if they are actually receiving a real pill or not.

The reason for this secrecy is the body has the amazing capability of healing itself just by suggestion. Often, many people can "heal themselves" by just the belief they are receiving a pill which will make them better. By taking away the knowledge you are receiving this pill, it is a general consensus if improvements are noted, it must be because of the medication, not "willpower" since no one really knows if they are getting real pills.

How This Program Does Not Fit Into Alternative Medicine Testing Procedures

Many common herbs, spices and plants have received this study and passed. Echinacea, garlic, saw palmetto, plus others are readily accepted as a means towards a cure. But some alternative medicine practices do not fit into these testing parameters.

It is often questioned, how can acupuncture or acupressure pass this study? How do you convince half of 1000 people that they did have a treatment and convince the other half they did not. This same question can be applied to many alternative medicine testing procedures. Many treatment programs or alternative therapies are not based on science such as open your mouth, pop a drug, and swallow.

It is the general consensus in the alternative community that a new way of validation must be made available for procedures which can not be controlled under the double-blind study parameters.

Therefore, to date, many alternative medicine testing procedures are fighting an uphill battle trying to convince the medical community itself their specialty can be a valuable asset to many treatment programs.
