Acupressure:
Self-Care Relief From
Types Of Alternative Medicine

Acupressure is an at-home self care remedy to help relieve stress-related problems, both physical and emotional. It gives you, the individual, the opportunity to use these types of alternative medicine to help in your own recovery. You must realize though, this is "not a do it alone method of treatment". Continue seeing your regular doctor for diagnosis and treatment. Just be sure to explain what else you are doing in your at-home care program.

What Is It?

Acupressure is an ancient healing art where you yourself are your own doctor. You will be using your own fingers to apply pressure or massage pre-determined points on your own body. This pressure is used to help relieve muscular tension which allows normal blood flow to the area. This in turn helps your own body's healing powers aid in restoring you to good health.

Eventually the popularity of this field of medicine started to wane when the quicker and easier method of acupuncture was born, mainly because of technological advancements. Because of the use of electrical impulses or needles as a means of manipulation, slowly acupressure was phased out in most doctor's offices.

How Does It Work

Whether acupressure therapy it is done by a professional or at home by yourself, some places on the skin are sensitive to bio-electrical impulses. These places are called potent points. By following a pre-determined pattern of potent points, the natural occurring chemical in our body, called endorphins, will be released which results in a lessening of painful symptoms. The final result will allow the muscles to relax which will promote healing.

As pressure is placed on a potent point, pain receptors do not have the capability of sending any strong signals to the brain. Thus a combination of pressure and greater blood flow to the affected area yields increased circulation, better relaxation of the muscle, more oxygen and nutrients to enter the area which helps to flush toxins out. All of this working together creates an ideal environment. This then can lead to better health.

Symptoms Which Will Commonly Be Alleviated

While conventional medicine will never become unnecessary, some situations do happen to be more receptive to alternative medicine. Several situations that often are treated successfully by acupressure are:

  • helps you control or manage increased stress and tension
  • relieves the pain of or helps to prevent sports injuries
  • improves skin tone
  • lessens or reduces the amount of wrinkles- especially in the facial area
  • speeds the healing of broken bones after conventional medicine has already set and immobilized it
  • relaxes and tones the spinal column- it is very effective when used in conjunction with chiropractic care
  • self-help routine care for many allergy conditions or in-house professional treatment available for severe allergies

How Does It Relate To Food Allergies

Although acupressure is not a cure for allergies, it is possible to help alleviate many common allergy symptoms. The wheezing, coughing, itching, hives etc. can be controlled or eliminated by learning and following through on an at-home care regimen. Most milder symptoms can be stopped quickly by simple techniques anyone can do with the proper training. Severe allergies or for major debilitating symptoms need to be handled by a trained caregiver.

Therefore acupressure and acupuncture can be an option in your treatment plan. As with all other forms of medicine, results will be different between different people. The only way to find out if it is a viable option in your circumstances is to make an appointment at a trained acupuncturist's office.
