Learning About Herbal Therapy

And Its Effective Goals Through
Many Types Of Alternative Medicine

Learning about herbal therapy, and other types of alternative medicine, has become a lifetime project in many families from the childhood to adult years. This is because herbs are considered one of the oldest forms of medicine in use today.

Much documentation has been found in all cultures of the world through the ages about herbal therapy. Experimentation has led to an entire science of health and healing just by using the plants nature has given us. Although about 3/4 of the plants which have known medicinal qualities are in use today, the large pharmaceutical industry in this world has veered away from them. Since drug companies have not been able to claim exclusive rights to selling an herb, the largest motivational factor of obtaining them- money - has been taken away. Research and grant money can not be allotted to developing new treatments which anyone can then market for their own gain. Therefore, learning about herbal therapy has predominantly been a trial and error process through the years in all cultures.

What Is An Herb

Any plant, or part of that plant such as the flowers, leaves, stem, seeds, root, fruit and bark which has been used in industry to make a medicine can be called an herb. Also many times, some herbs are commonly used as flavorings, spices or are processed into aromatic oils. Therefore an herb and all of its component parts, when broken down do have many important chemical properties which can be used for health and healing. Some common names most people recognize are digoxin (from the foxglove plant) and morphine (from the opium poppy).

Availability Of Herbal Medications

Although regular conventional medicine is nearly 80% of the practicing treatments in the United States, in other countries herbal therapy, its medicines and treatments are much more widely available. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has consistently banned the use of herbals in over-the-counter drugs. Conversely though, the general population is learning more about herbal therapy and its use. This is because word of mouth has shown its proven effectiveness with far fewer reported negative side effects.

Currently there is no controlling body for herbal medicine in the United States. Many experienced and well-trained practitioners are available though who use the principles of herbal medicine in their practice. Licensed naturopathic physicians, the traditional chinese medicines and ayurvedic medicine all have skilled and qualified professionals now available with solid educations in herbal medicine therapies.

Because of the ever-increasing numbers of people which are now questioning about herbal therapy, information is slowly becoming more readily available. Its availability for treatment is also now easier to obtain. For information for treatment options for your area please contact:
